about

Api Ascaso, sings and plays the melodica, piano, drums, guitar, Ukulele and a few other herbs. Layil Barr- Bass viol, recorders, voice, piano and red lipstick. "La Perla", the song that was chosen for the Sound Archive, was born when Layil tried out a ground pattern on the viol and Api started to improvise on top of it. This was the moment we realised we want to dive into a project together.

“We felt the songs were shaping themselves in a very natural though a little explosive, enriching way. Layil suggested using her second-floor balcony for socially distant rehearsal space so that we could keep making music together in lockdown. Playing on the balcony, immersed in the smell of flowers and rubbish, we felt we connect to balcony music all around the world. Our song "La Perla '' talks about that transformation process, how broken pieces can reshape into beauty creating a new reality, how time and perspective can bring us answers. Our collaboration helped us survive a pandemic. We can totally say our balcony sessions kept us sane. For us, music making brings joy and healing. Composing together, being able to work on a new artistic project in lockdown, play live music, made us feel there is still a place for our musicians' identity to exist. We feel our music reflects our life experiences, being women, mothers, and immigrants on this island. In the actual work, we find mutual respect and openness to hear each other's opinions and ideas, allowing the creative process to expand”.
